Strengthening Hydrological Monitoring with Smarter Weather Data

FreedPer Scientific is proud to have recently completed the installation of Evapotranspiration Automatic Weather Stations (ET-AWS) for the Upper Manyame Sub-Catchment Council. These stations are designed to provide reliable, high-frequency weather data to support better understanding and management of water resources.
What makes these stations valuable?
1. Davis sensor suite – captures key meteorological parameters required for evapotranspiration and environmental monitoring.
2. Built-in buffer memory – if communication is temporarily interrupted, the station continues recording and storing observations. Once connectivity is restored, the stored data can be uploaded, helping minimise data gaps.
3. Data every 5 minutes – provides frequent observations, giving technical teams access to timely weather information for analysis and decision-making.
4. Solar powered with battery backup – designed for continuous operation
5. Supporting water resource management – evapotranspiration information is particularly valuable for understanding the relationship between weather conditions, atmospheric water demand and water availability.
For Upper Manyame Sub-Catchment Council, as an important institution in Zimbabwe's water resources and hydrological management framework, reliable meteorological observations can contribute to improved water resources planning, catchment management, irrigation planning, drought monitoring and climate-informed decision-making.
This project demonstrates how high-frequency, resilient weather observations can strengthen hydrological monitoring and help turn environmental data into actionable information.
At FreedPer Scientific, we don't just install weather stations. We help build the data infrastructure needed to manage Africa's water and environmental resources more effectively.
