From Zimbabwe to Eritrea: Delivering Specialised Meteorological Services Across Africa

Weather and climate information is increasingly important for decision-making across Africa. From agriculture and water management to disaster preparedness and early warning systems, reliable weather observations provide the foundation for informed action.
For organisations working to strengthen these systems, installing meteorological equipment is only one part of the solution. Equipment must be correctly installed, calibrated, commissioned and maintained, while local teams need the knowledge and skills to operate and manage the systems effectively. This was the approach taken by FreedPer Scientific during a recent weather observation project in Eritrea, where our team travelled from Zimbabwe to deliver specialised meteorological services in support of the Government of Eritrea.
Taking Zimbabwean Expertise to Eritrea
The project brought together FreedPer Scientific, COSMOS Contracting, GRAND GROUP and the Ministry of Agriculture in a collaborative effort to support weather observation activities.

Our assignment involved several critical components, including:
Installation of specialised weather observation equipment
Equipment calibration
System commissioning
Technical training
Knowledge transfer to local personnel
The project required more than simply delivering equipment to a site. It required technical expertise, careful coordination between project partners and a strong focus on ensuring that the installed equipment could be effectively used and maintained.
More Than Equipment Installation
At FreedPer Scientific, we believe that successful meteorological projects should leave behind more than physical infrastructure. A weather station or observation instrument is valuable because of the data it produces. To achieve this, the equipment must be properly installed, calibrated and commissioned, while the people responsible for operating it must have the necessary technical skills.
For this reason, capacity building and knowledge transfer formed an important part of our assignment in Eritrea. Through hands-on training, local personnel were introduced to the equipment and the processes required for its effective operation. This approach helps ensure that technical knowledge is not simply imported with the equipment but is also transferred to the people who will ultimately work with the systems.
Working Across Borders and With Multiple Partners
International technical projects require close collaboration. The Eritrea assignment involved coordination between multiple organisations and stakeholders, each contributing to different aspects of the project. Working effectively within this structure required clear communication, technical coordination and a shared focus on successful project delivery.
For FreedPer Scientific, the experience further demonstrated our ability to operate in different African environments and work alongside local and international partners to deliver specialised technical assignments. Our experience has shown that successful project implementation depends not only on the quality of the equipment, but also on:
Strengthening Weather Observation Networks
Across Africa, many countries continue to face challenges associated with gaps in weather and environmental observations. Limited observation networks can affect the availability of timely and reliable data for sectors such as agriculture, water resources, disaster risk reduction and climate services. Strengthening these networks therefore requires investment in both observation infrastructure and technical capacity.
This is where FreedPer Scientific sees an important opportunity. Our work focuses on providing meteorological, hydrological and environmental monitoring solutions that are suited to the operational requirements of organisations across Africa. From manual and automatic weather stations to specialised observation equipment, installation, calibration, training and maintenance, our objective is to provide solutions that support the complete project lifecycle.
Building African Technical Capacity
One of the most important lessons from projects such as the Eritrea assignment is that Africa does not only need more equipment. It also needs more technical capacity to install, operate, maintain and utilise that equipment effectively. This is why knowledge transfer is central to our approach.
When technical teams and local institutions have the skills required to operate observation systems, investments in equipment can deliver value over a much longer period. For FreedPer Scientific, this represents an important part of our broader mission: contributing to the development of stronger weather, water and environmental observation capabilities across the continent.
From Zimbabwe to Eritrea and Beyond
Our journey from Zimbabwe to Eritrea is part of a growing track record of delivering specialised meteorological and environmental monitoring projects across Africa. We are continuing to build partnerships with governments, development organisations, private-sector companies, research institutions and other stakeholders seeking to strengthen observation networks and environmental data systems.

As Africa works to improve climate resilience, food security, water management and early warning systems, reliable environmental data will remain increasingly important. We don't just deliver equipment. We deliver capability. From Zimbabwe to Eritrea, and across Africa, FreedPer Scientific is committed to being a trusted technical partner for high-impact turnkey weather, water and environmental monitoring projects.
